X•Altea™ – A product 20 years in the making By Stephen Cherniske
In 2001, my editor at Random House reminded me that I had a contract with them for two more books. “What exciting project are you working on?” she asked. I started telling her about the new genomic equipment that we had just installed, and how we were screening and cataloging thousands of plant compounds each week. “Blah Blah Blah,” she replied, “tell me in apple and orange language how that will benefit regular people.” I thought about it for a few seconds and replied, “The emerging model of aging – what I call the metabolic model – focuses on two opposing factors: damage and repair. We’re looking for plant compounds that can reduce damage and accelerate repair.”
“Hmmm.” I could tell that she was still looking for the hook; the image that would pique the average reader’s interest. So I added, “think of a see-saw. On one side you have the damage to cells, tissues and organs that is an inherent part of living. On the other side, you have the body’s ability to repair that damage. When you’re young, repair capacity is incredible, so damage is almost insignificant. Then, as you age, repair capacity declines and damage starts to accumulate, producing all the signs of degeneration.
“Hmmm.” Her tone indicated that she was starting to get it, but I needed to make one more impact point. “For most people,” I explained, “the tipping point – where damage starts to exceed repair – is … [I paused for effect] … age 30.”
“Yikes!” she replied. “Write about that! I love the see-saw. I get the concept. And be sure to give people specific things they can do to tip the see-saw in their favor. It has to be a well-defined plan. “
Two years later, I was appearing on interview shows all over the country to talk about The Metabolic Plan. Stay Younger Longer. And while every product I’ve ever formulated plays a role, X•Altea does double duty. Some of the ingredients accelerate repair and others dramatically reduce damage. Here’s how that works.
Improve repair with bioenergetics.
All repair is energy-dependent. X•Altea provides what are known as bioenergetics ingredients; compounds that help your body produce more energy. Bioenergetics work in five different ways and optimal benefits are experienced by the synergy of all five. Here’s a brief look at the science of bioenergetics.
Category One: optimizing Krebs cycle efficiency
Cells generate energy through a chemical assembly line known as the Krebs cycle. The rate-limiting step in this cycle is alpha-ketoglutaric acid (AKG). You don’t get AKG from food. Your body makes it when you need energy, and as you might guess, there are conditions where you don’t make enough, leading to fatigue.
- * Aging
- * Strenuous exercise
- * Illness / disease
X•Altea provides 333 mg of AKG per serving. Importantly, supplementation with AKG has been shown to improve sports performance when combined with Vitamin B6, so we include the required amount of B6 as Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P-5-P).
Category Two: Circulation and blood flow
X•Altea uses AKG stabilized with arginine, an amino acid. Arginine contributes to energy production by generating nitric oxide (NO), which can improve blood flow and oxygen delivery. Also in this category is beet concentrate, shown in numerous studies to improve sports performance by increasing fuel and oxygen delivery.
Category Three: The electron transport chain
The final step in generating energy is known as the electron transport chain, which depends on the availability of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10). Research supports CoQ10 as both an anti-fatigue agent and as a powerful antioxidant. . Importantly, these benefits are cumulative, optimized by daily intake. X•Altea provides 10 mg of CoQ10 per serving.
Category Four: Insulin sensitivity
Inositol is another bioenergetic ingredient that works by improving insulin sensitivity. Energy production depends on the delivery of fuel (as glucose) to cells throughout the body. This is facilitated by insulin, but in certain conditions (obesity, diabetes, aging and certain illnesses) cells become resistant to insulin, which dramatically reduces exercise ability. Interestingly, this also appears to account for the ability of inositol to reduce anxiety and improve mood.
X•Altea provides 900 mg of inositol per serving
Category Five: Glycogen metabolism
Glycogen is a stored form of energy, held mainly in the liver and muscles. A consistent energy state (avoiding the energy / fatigue rollercoaster) requires the timely depletion and repletion of glycogen. D-Ribose has been shown to increase cellular energy production in heart and skeletal muscle by enhancing glycogen resynthesis. . This has led to research showing energy benefits in various illnesses and exercise testing conditions.
X•Altea provides 2,000 mg of D-Ribose per serving.
Reduce the most damaging forces: Inflammation and oxidative stress.
On the damage side of the see-saw are four damaging forces. Two – illness and injury – are episodic, while oxidative stress and inflammation are chronic. What’s more they are inseparable. You cannot have oxidative stress without inflammation and vice versa.
Fortunately, there are natural compounds that address both of these damaging forces. Collectively known as polyphenols, they are concentrated in brightly colored fruits and vegetables. Since X•Altea is a drink mix, we focused on taste as well as potency, designing a polyphenol blend that is unsurpassed in the natural product arena.
Purity: Each ingredient is tested for purity by third party lab analysis, and is guaranteed to contain no fillers, flow agents, gums or GMO’s.
Potency: We are a full-disclosure company, listing ingredients in quantity order. Quantitative analysis shows that Aronia is the most powerful berry polyphenol, with extraordinarily high levels of valuable compounds including quercetin and anthocyanins. Each serving of X•Altea provides 1,670 mg of Aronia concentrate, equivalent to a third of a cup of fresh aronia berries.
Next is organic beet concentrate, rich in naturally-occurring nitrates, which, as mentioned above, can stimulate nitric oxide (NO) synthesis resulting in improved circulation.
The rest of the berries follow in quantity order, selected to provide the widest possible spectrum of polyphenols.
X•Altea was formulated to provide a wide range of benefits; some that you will feel after only a few days. Greater and more consistent energy, better mood, and other quality of life benefits.
Then there are the benefits you can’t feel, but that you experience over time. For example, you don’t feel damaging free radicals being neutralized. You won’t feel yourself not getting an overuse injury. But you will know that you’re tipping the see-saw in your favor, utilizing a proven strategy to alter the way you experience the aging process.

X•Altea contains only 100% natural and safe ingredients, with each independently analyzed for purity and potency.
NOTE: As with all nutritional supplements, we recommend consulting with your health care provider before starting X•Altea, especially if you currently take prescription medications.
We recommend mixing a rounded tsp (about 5g) of X•Altea in 4 to 6 oz of hot (not boiling) water. This helps to “activate” the beverage by releasing aromatic compounds and blending the natural fruit flavors. Enjoy hot or cold.
X•Altea can also be prepared in advance. A standard shaker bottle holds 24 oz. Fill the bottle with water and pour into a saucepan or microwave-safe container. Heat briefly on stovetop or microwave for one minute.
CAUTION: Water should be hot, but not more than 150º F. Add two heaping Tbsp of X•Altea (about 30g). Shake well and enjoy. Can be refrigerated for up to one week. Makes 6 servings.
X•Altea contains no caffeine or other CNS stimulants, so it is unlikely to disrupt your sleep. Nevertheless, X•Altea does provide true bioenergetic compounds shown to improve exercise and stamina. Thus, we believe it is best used before 7:PM.
The X•Altea experience unfolds in stages. Most people notice improvements in mood and focus almost immediately. The energy benefits (improved exercise and stamina) may take a week or so. Circulation benefits (from arginine, D-Ribose, Aronia and beet concentrates) will follow. And, of course, you don’t feel the powerful antioxidant effects derived from the industry-leading polyphenol blend, but every cell in your body will benefit from the ability of these high-potency fruit concentrates to protect you from oxidative stress. Most important, the benefits obtained from X•Altea are cumulative and increase with consistent daily use.
X•Altea contains only natural and safe ingredients. Still, it is always recommended to check with your physician before starting any nutritional program, especially if you are taking medications prescribed by your doctor. Also, X•Altea is not intended for those under 18 years of age.
It is important for pregnant women to consult with their birth professional before using any nutritional supplement. We are happy to discuss product questions with health care professionals.
My first experience with X•Altea™ was a great test as
I’d been working extra long hours for over a week.
My mind was in a fog, and felt I could have slept a
few more hours.
Within 15 minutes of drinking my first 3 oz, the fog
lifted, I regained focus, the fatigue was gone
and it felt as if someone had turned the lights on!
So yes, X•Altea™ is a keeper that I’ll be adding to my
favorite juice and protein shakes twice a day!
